We know that most dog owners are responsible and clean up after their pets, but we’ve seen an increase in complaints to our office about dog fouling since the weather warmed up.

There is not a lot we can do to address complaints without knowing who the dog owners are except to signpost complainants to the Dog Warden service at East Lothian Council.

The Dog Warden Service has greater authority to investigate and assign penalties to careless dog owners, and they can also advise you on a number of dog-related issues.

To contact East Lothian Council's Dog Warden, you can call 01620 829 917 during the day or call the Antisocial Behaviour line on 01875 824 307 in the evening.

We need to highlight that allowing a pet to cause nuisance is a breach of the tenancy agreement.  Dog fouling can be dangerous to both human health and the environment as it can contain harmful bacteria, parasites and viruses.

If you know one of our tenants is allowing their dog to foul the communal areas, and you tell us who they are then we will address this matter, confidentially. There are legal remedies available to use to resolve issues, which, if not addressed, could result in us removing a pet from their home permanently.  We would not want to take such drastic action, but we will if necessary, to protect the health and safety of those living in the area and the general public.
